Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to the March edition of the HWY1 Update email, on Pi Day even!  This message contains the latest news and upcoming events for the HWY1 group.

Reminders:

  1. Shooting Range Event --  On Saturday March 24th, our group will be killing all sorts of clay pigeons and paper targets (hopefully) at the North Linn Fish & Game Club in Central City.  An idea spawned by Mark Banghart and voted onto the calendar during ENCORE this past Sunday, there will be a variety of guns and ammo to use, plus a clubhouse to take a break from killing things (or just avoid doing so altogether).  The event is currently scheduled to start at 1:00pm and will start with a safety briefing before any shooting is done.  Cost will be based on attendance; facility rental is $80 and will be divided equally among participants; guns and ammo graciously provided by Mark and the Woychiks.  Arrange a carpool if desired and meet at the Club in Central City at 1:00pm.  I am told it's possible to shoot rain or shine, so plan accordingly.

Directions to the Club (on Game Club Rd in Central City, if you'd rather map it yourself; Google Maps) -- take your favorite route* to Hwy 13 North, turn right in Central City at amber flashing light onto W Maple St, drive through town and under railroad tracks and turn right immediately onto Game Club Rd, the Club is on the left side of the road BEFORE the gravel starts

*examples: I-380 North to exit 28 (County Home Rd), turn right and head East until you intersect Hwy 13 (by the landfill) and turn left; or go East through Marion and turn left at Hwy 13; or take Hwy 30 to Hwy 13 and go North

News:
  1. Hitchcock Movie Night Cancelled --  Due to illnesses and broken cars we had to cancel this event.  It was initially thought that it would be rescheduled, but circumstances have made that unlikely (at least this month).  However, it will stay on our list of desirable events, perhaps for a rainy day.
Upcoming Dates:
March 24th
1pm
Shooting Range Event
@ North Linn Fish & Game Club
in Central City
Possible Future Events:
  • Ice Skating?
  • Four-wheeling?
  • Video Game Night?
  • Hitchcock Movie Night
  • (got other ideas?  post them on the forum!)

27-Feb-2007

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to the February edition of the HWY1 Update email!  This message contains the latest news and upcoming events for the HWY1 group.

Reminders:

  1. Hitchcock Movie Night --  Next Friday (March 9th), the Wrights are hosting a movie night at their house in Swisher (the same location as our October 2005 event).  We will start at 6pm and plan to watch at least two Hitchcock classics on their big screen TV.  Chila is coordinating a food sign-up to ensure that we have yummy things to eat.  The Wrights also have plenty of room to goof around if anybody needs a break from the movies.

Directions to the Wrights' (1920 Plotz Rd, if you'd rather map it yourself) -- take I-380 South to exit 10 (Swisher/Shueyville), turn right onto 120th St, left onto Falcon Rd, right onto Plotz Rd, right into driveway of red house at top of hill; it should take about 20 minutes to get there once you're on the Interstate

  2. ENCORE --  This Sunday is Camp Sunday, so Phil Betz (IARBC camp director) will be teaching during the morning service and presenting information about the camp ministry during a combined ENCORE, so we will not have our usual meeting in the annex.
News:
  1. Ski Trip --  In case you are still unaware, there are some pictures from our ski trip (three weeks ago) posted on the HWY1 website for your enjoyment.
Upcoming Dates:
March 9th
6pm
Hitchcock Movie Night @ Wrights' in Swisher
Future Events: (subject to change)
  • Ice Skating?
  • Sledding?
  • Four-wheeling?  (maybe after it warms up a little)

24-Jan-2007

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to the January edition of the HWY1 Update email!  This message contains the latest news and upcoming events for the HWY1 group.

Reminders:

  1. Game Night --  This Saturday (Jan 27th), we are having a game night at the church building.  The official start/end times are 5pm to 11pm, but it will be very unstructured, so feel free to show up whenever you can and leave whenever you need to.  We will be providing drinks (pop, juice and stuff) but you should bring some munchies to share and your favorite games to play.

  2. Ski Trip --  If you signed up to go skiing on February 9th and haven't paid yet, turn in your money as soon as you can.  It looks like we'll have about twenty people going this year, so it should be a good group and a good time.  If you've never been skiing before, or not with this group, don't worry:  information about what to wear and bring and how not to fall down will be distributed before the event (maybe as soon as this Sunday).

  3. Annual Business Meeting --  This is an important event for our church as we review progress made during 2006 and make important decisions for 2007.  Plan to get involved, even if you're not a member because the church isn't the building and it's not just the members either, the church includes you too.
News:
  1. ENCORE --  For those of you who haven't been in the post-college ENCORE class the past couple weeks, this is just a heads-up:  the two classes that comprise the HWY1 fellowship are joining forces during ENCORE starting February 4th in the annex as the people with kids graduate into the Family Bible Fellowship ENCORE class.  There will be snacks and an unconventional ENCORE class on Sunday to celebrate the upcoming changes.
Upcoming Dates:
January 27th
5-11pm
Game Night at church building
February 9th
8pm
All-Night Ski @ Sundown Mountain
Future Events: (subject to change)
  • February - skiing
  • Ice Skating?
  • Sledding?
  • Four-wheeling?  (maybe after it warms up a little)

10-Jan-2007

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to the January edition of the HWY1 Update email!  This message contains the latest news and upcoming events for the HWY1 group.

Reminders:

  1. Overnight Ski Trip Sign-up Deadline --  The ski trip (Feb 9th) will be here before we know it, but the deadline to sign up and prepay will arrive even sooner (Jan 21st).  In fact, before our January event even happens (see #2), you will need to sign up for the ski trip.  There are three convenient options for signing up:  sign up at your nearest sign-up sheet (one on info table, one in each ENCORE class), reply to this email or call the Moseys (447-1851).  The cost is only $35 for ski rental and lift ticket or $40 for a snowboard w/lift.  We'll meet at the church at 8pm and return around 6am.  We've participated in this event for several years and it's always a good time.

  2. Game Night --  As we have done in the past, we're going to have a game fest at the church building, except instead of a Sunday afternoon like usual, it's a Saturday evening.  Plan to join us on January 27th at 5pm.  Bring your favorite games, munchies to share (drinks will be provided), and a friend.
News:
  1. Be sure to make it to ENCORE this Sunday (either class) because an exciting announcement will be made that you will not want to miss.  If you're not there, you'll have to wait a whole month for another one of these Update emails to learn about it.
Upcoming Dates:
January 21st

All-Night Ski Trip sign-up deadline

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to the December edition of the HWY1 Update email!  This message contains the latest news and upcoming events for the HWY1 group.

  1. HACAP Service Event --  This coming Tuesday (Dec 12th), we are having a service event benefiting the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program.  Starting at 6:00pm our group will be packing food boxes to feed the needy in our community.  We need at least eight people to come along and help (there's seven signed up so far).  I attached a PDF of the sign-up sheet, in case you didn't write down the directions or never saw the sign-up sheet.  IMPORTANT:  If you plan to participate, please call (270-4395) or email me before this Friday so we can inform HACAP about how many people will be there.

  3. New Year's Eve Party --  BRBC is hosting an end-of-year celebration and our group is invited.  The itinerary is top-secret, so if you don't come you'll have no idea what exciting activities you missed.  Here's some hints:  Fellowship, Fun and, most importantly, Food.
News:
  1. I announced it in the non-college ENCORE class, but in case you missed it, we had a good turnout for our Bowling Event in November and with a willing and capable photographer along (thanks, Robby!) we even have pictures to prove it.  Visit http://hwy1.blairridge.org/photos.php?cap=bowling to see what you missed.

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to another edition of the monthly email!  Here's the latest news and upcoming events for the HWY1 group!

Reminders:

  1. Bowling --  Two weeks from today (Nov 15th), we are going bowling at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center on Blairs Ferry Rd. (next to Volleys).  We will start at 7:30pm and have reserved enough space for 10-15 people.  The cost will be $8 per person, which includes the cost of shoes (alternatively, feel free to bring your own equipment, I'm going to).  We would like to get an idea of who is planning to attend so we don't start without you, so click Reply or indicate your intentions during ENCORE.
  2. ENCORE --  This Sunday, due to the Harvest Meal, we will be having a combined adult ENCORE class in the auditorium, viewing a video related to the sermon passage.
  3. Harvest Meal --  In honor of the fall harvest (and in lieu of a Thanksgiving meal), Blair Ridge is having a turkey and trimmings meal after the morning service.  Unlike some previous meals, it is NOT a potluck, so only bring stuff if you were specifically asked to; if you weren't, just come eat some yummy food.
  4. Website --  In case you forgot, all of these Update emails are posted on the HWY1 website along with upcoming events, photos and a link to the HWY1 forum.  You can also unsubscribe from this list or find links to other online resources.

In case you missed it, we had a great time at the Maize Maze & Unhaunted Hayride.  You can find some pictures of the Maze on the HWY1 website and, if you know where to look, you can also find evidence of the dirtier part of the evening.  Make sure to join us for our next event because if you miss out, we miss you.
  2. The Cedar Rapids Ice Arena is offering group rates for ice skating again this year.  Please express interest if you would like to see our group do this again.  So far I've only heard one "yes" vote (and zero "no" votes).
  3. Shanna called the lady at Sundown Mountain and confirmed that we are invited to participate in the all-night ski event on Friday, February 9th.  We need a minimum of 15 people to attend, cost is still just $35/person.

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to the next edition of our twice-monthly email, designed to keep you informed and connected to our group!

First, there are pictures posted from our recent Game Day on the HWY1 website:
http://hwy1.blairridge.org/photos.php?cap=Game%20Day&per=-1

Next, a couple notes about ENCORE:
Note #1 - this Sunday (3/26) there will be a special speaker and combined adult ENCORE in the auditorium following the morning service, rather than individual classes.
Note #2 - next Sunday (4/2) normal ENCORE will resume and the post-college HWY1 class will be meeting in our new classroom across from the Candy Stripe Room (the same place we met last week, 3/19).

Also, details have been firmed up for next month's fun event:
What: Mini Golf @ Planet X
When: April 25th, dinner at 6:30pm, golf at about 7:15pm
Where: meet at the Lindale Mall Food Court for dinner of your choice, we will go next door to Planet X for mini golf after we finish eating
Cost: probably $2.50, assuming the two-for-one coupon is still available ($5 otherwise)

Finally, information is beginning to be available about our camping trip in June.  There is a sign-up sheet with some preliminary details floating around during ENCORE, plus the details will be posted to the Schedule Page on the HWY1 website as they solidify:

Dear Young Adults,

Welcome to another edition of our twice-monthly email, designed to keep you informed and connected to our group!  If this is the first HWY1 Update you have received, welcome to the list.  This isn't junk mail and you won't get lots of these, but they are important so try to read through at least once before you delete it.  If you decide that you never want to get another one of these, just reply and I can remove you from the list.  That said, let's get to the good part.

First up in this edition, a quick note about the author.  Shanna has been in charge of writing these emails and keeping in touch with people since the very first HWY1 Update email (26-May-05).  However, due to budget cut-backs (just kidding), I have agreed to take over event planning for our group and, consequently, this periodic email about those events.  In the future, try to ignore the spelling and grammatical errors that our new, underpaid staffer (that's me!) will undoubtedly make.  :-)

Next, an important reminder about our upcoming Food & Fun event.

Food: party sub from Blimpie, BYO beverage AND a side dish or dessert to share
Fun: board games, card games, two video game systems, foosball, ping pong, etc.
Where: Blair Ridge Baptist Church
When: after ENCORE (noonish) on Sunday, March 19th (ends at 6pm)
Bring: your favorite games, your own beverage and a side dish or dessert
Sign-Up deadline is this Sunday, March 12th! (so we know how much sub to get)
You can sign up during ENCORE or just reply to this email.

Finally, as the weather starts getting warmer, calendars will start filling up for the summer months.  Make sure that you don't miss out on our camping trip at Pinicon Ridge park on June 9-11.  Just go ahead and pencil it in on your calendar now and we'll be getting together more details in the next couple months.  So far we do know that we will have some folks in a cabin, so we can use the fridge/microwave/oven, and most folks in tent(s).  There will be campfire meals and some fun activities.  Let us know if you have specific ideas for what you want to do when we go camping.

In case you ever wonder if you missed an email (or your computer pukes and you lose all of your email), I'm going to try to keep the latest email posted on our HWY1 website for your reference.  The web address is at the very bottom of this email, plus there is a link from our church website (blairridge.org).

If you have any questions about this stuff or need more information, please write me back.
